OMG call me weird but I LOVED that Jenny story hahahaha. Like, I knew it was freaky but I had my dad read us In A Dark, Dark Room a lot (a book he bought us kids, much to my mom’s chagrin).

And Where The Red Fern Grows is the first non-picture book I remember loving. Definitely heartbreaking.

I'm glad you had a good experience with it!! Over time I grew to like it, but I think I was a little too young when I first discovered it 😅

It's such a good one, but ugh it hurts so much.

Coraline in 5th grade. Never again. 🫣

I think that was the one I almost fainted giving a book report on in Mr. Latta's class because I was so nervous lol Also, I can't believe I didn't think to put Bridge to Terabithia on this list!!

Oh no, Isla is about to read Island of the Blue Dolphins for a project! I've never read it. I also couldn't handle The Velveteen Rabbit. The Giver was haunting to me as a kid since they just shipped people off to die like it was a fun time, Hatchet terrified me during the underwater plane dive where the dead pilot is just bone and hair, and A Taste of Blackberries where the neighbor kid dies from a bee sting, but everyone thinks he's just being goofy and leaves him to go play while he can't breathe. There are so many! Isla read one in 4th grade where there was a drive-by shooting into a kid's bedroom while they slept. Um...omg

She might like it! It ultimately ends well, I believe. I'm glad someone else is on the same page as me regarding The Velveteen Rabbit. The Giver was totally haunting and I completely agree about The Hatchet. I never read A Taste of Blackberries, but it sounds similar to the scene in the movie My Girl 😢 There are some wild children's books out there! I suppose it's good to develop kids' emotional ranges, but damn...

Omg the walk this took me down memory lane....though I have to admit I remember loving island of the blue dolphins!! I did, however, read A Child Called It waaaay too young (weirdly it was a book we could choose to read for english class in 7th grade?!) and having a panic attack and having to go to my teacher to say I needed to switch books 😭 traumatic

I wish I loved that book, especially because it's based on a true story, but it was somehow too much for me 😅 Oh my god, I just looked up the summary of a A Child Called It, how traumatizing!! I don't blame you at all for your reaction then, I don't even think I could read that now at this age!

No I totally get it!! In hindsight it feels like a suffocating/claustrophobic type of book

Where the Red Fern Grows is the first book that SHOOK me. My mom found me in my bed, inconsolable. I still think about it too often.

At least you got to be in the comfort of your own home! Gah, that book was so heartbreaking
